Raingun
by John Blackport
blog for the hop: http://johnblackport.wordpress.com/
Available from amazon

Rick Rivoire is flush with money, women, and prospects. He protects his country as one of the Rainguns, an elite regiment of spellcasting cavalry. But the national policy drifts further and further into slavery and religious persecution, sparking rebellion. Joining the rebels could land Rick on a prison ship, in slave-irons --- or atop the same gallows where he watched his father hang.

The alternative looks no brighter. The status quo imperils Rick’s hard-won self-respect. Supporting tyranny would doom his dream to emulate the valiant swordswoman who braved a den of monsters to rescue the lonely, terrified nine-year-old boy he once was. Rick can’t stay above the fray forever. He must either defend an aristocracy whose actions disgust him --- or risk everything he has. This is the first book of The Talan Revolt. This book contains graphic violence and some explicit sex. It is intended for adults only.

The neighbouring kingdoms of Oscia and Arcathia have been at a tentative peace for three years after centuries of warfare. Prince Severin of Arcathia has been brought up to put duty before all else and as the only son of the King and Queen, it is his duty to marry and produce an heir. His parents want him to marry an Oscian princess to cement that tentative peace. Unfortunately Severin isn't interested in princesses. Now, if he had his pick of princes that would be another matter.

Havyn has been a slave all his life. When his aptitude for wizardry is discovered, he finds himself purchased and freed by Prince Severin and apprenticed to the royal wizard, Ildar. His duty is to stay chaste to keep his powers strong, but his feelings for Severin sorely test his resolve.

With kingdoms at war, the throne hanging in the balance, magic in the air, and outside forces trying to keep them apart, can the two men find happiness together, or is duty more important than love?

New Zealand with a Hobbit Botherer
by John Gisby & Annette Gisby
blog for hop: http://www.zipperrippers.blogspot.co.uk
Available from amazon

What should you do if your spouse becomes addicted to the Lord of the Rings movies and swoons at the very mention of Orlando Bloom's name? (Thud. Quick, fetch the smelling salts.)

How about taking the advice of a strange apparition that reveals itself in a dream? An apparition that looks remarkably like the director of the movies, Peter Jackson, but not quite remarkably enough to prompt legal action.

An apparition that recommends touring New Zealand in an effort to prove that its sheep pastures aren't really filled by frolicking Hobbits. Just sheep and the occasional zorbing local.

This is the hilarious tale of such a tour, featuring snow capped mountains and turquoise lakes, flightless birds and flying cattle, bungy jumping grannies and the carrot mafia, strange yellow eyes peering up from a road map and hotel receptionists always desperate to know "win you are living."

And so begins Her Master's Madness. The faerie Lhea can't help but be drawn into his intricate music and dark ways. Yet when the trap is sprung, will she truly pay the highest price?

This dark fairy tale novella contains a twisted romance, domination, submission, and horror. Over 23k words.

Yseult: A Tale of Love in the time of King Arthur
by Ruth Nestvold
Book 1 of The Pendragon Chronicles
blog for hop: http://ruthnestvold.wordpress.com
Available from amazon

For the price of a truce, Yseult is sent to a world where magic is dying - to marry the father of the man she loves.

Marcus's son Drystan would have saved her from a loveless marriage, but with her relatives being held hostage, Yseult cannot endanger them and must go through with the wedding. The tragic love story of Yseult and Drystan plays out against the backdrop of a violent world threatening to descend into the Dark Ages - only Arthur's battles to push back the Saxon hordes can save what is left of civilization. With her background, Yseult could act as a bridge between the old age and the new - but will the price be too high?

Yseult is a retelling of the tragic tale of Tristan and Isolde, a story older than Romeo and Juliet or Lancelot and Guinevere; an Arthurian romance with roots going back far into the realm of legend and the undying tales of King Arthur.

Caitlin's Book of Shadows
by Juli D Revezzo
blog for hop: http://julidrevezzo.com/blog
Available from amazon

Something terrifying stalks Caitlin and her beloved Trevor. Something the bits and pieces she left claimed she had to make sense of--or so legend says. When the curator of their collection finds Caitlin's long forgotten diary, she wonders will it tell the whole tale? Will it tell why Caitlin seemed so determined to tell the difference between reality and nightmare even as she continued the fight to defend her family from evil? Will it explain why she thought her world twisted? If she really became a witch?

Perhaps the answer lies between the lines of her story, one of lessons, struggles, and the hopes she carried like a warrior's shield.

**This is a side (or supplemental, if you will) story in the Antique Magic series, a companion to The Artist's Inheritance (Antique Magic, Book One).

  1. My favourite fantasy book ever has to be Terry Pratchett's Unseen Academicals. Even though I hate football usually, Pratchett's fantasy world of mayhem and mishaps mixed with the social commentary of the world of English football had me in stitches all the way through!

Although I have to say that in terms of more serious fantasy novels I'm sorely tempted by Runebreaker's synopsis here! What a great sounding story.

  2. I really enjoyed a series of fantasy books by Piers Anthony that were full of word play and puns. I wonder if I would like them as well now.

  3. Pierce Anthony just added a new one to one of his series. I think it was through the looking glass I honestly can not remember!
My favorite of all time though were the Ravenloft series and Dungeon and Dragons books from the 1980's.

  13. AWESOME giveaway!

I LOVED the Immortals series by Tamora Pierce. It's a young adult (I think) series that I read when I was, well, a young adult, and I absolutely LOVED it! The books include Wolf Speaker, Wild Magic, The Emperor Mage and I'm sure others. Just a good mix of magic, action and suspense!

  18. There are two fantasy series I've read and really liked The Drakon series by Shana Abe, and The Seven Realms series by Cinda Williams Chima. One is about dragons (people who turn to dragons and smoke) and the other has wizards, princesses, and a clan whom are a little harder to explain.

  19. TOUGH. Well--realistically--either "The Sword of Welleran & Other Stories" by Lord Dunsany or "The Wood Beyond the World" by William Morris. Oh, but George MacDonald demands mention, too...! >.<

Dunsany is always good, but he can also be brilliant, and I think "Sword of Welleran" really shows him at his very best... well nigh consistently. There are several genuinely stunning short stories in this collection of incredibly dreamy and mesmerising tales.

Ignoring the man's many other remarkable accomplishments, William Morris's romances contain some of the most beautiful prose I have ever read. Imagine a novel-length fairy tale with poetic and enchanting language and a dollop of Medieval conventions, and you'd get "The Wood Beyond the World." It's little wonder that most of the fantasy greats cite this novel as a great inspiration.

The good news is that all the books I've mentioned are in thee public domain, and can be downloaded in just about every ebook format for free from Project Gutenberg, and some of them are available as free audiobooks from Librivox. I really cannot recommend those two books highly enough. :P

  21. I have so many but Lord of the Rings will always be my absolute favorite. It was the start to my love of fantasy.

  22. It's hard to choose but if you twisted my arm ;) I'd say the Elric series by Michael Moorcock is my favorite fantasy series.
